North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve is the only specially protected nature territory of its kind in Latvia.
It covers 457,708 ha of land and 10 municipalities , as well as 57 km of sea coastal area with its adjacent sea
aquatory. Reserve was established in 1997 and is declared a nature conservation area of international importance within the UNESCO programme.
Unlike other specially protected nature territories, it includes not only natural objects, but also a human being as one of the natural elements – reserve preserves natural and landscape values of international importance, by ensuring sustainable social and economic development.
Edition of tourism map is supplemented with information about 12 most interesting places to visit in North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve – Burtnieku lake vicinity, Seda swamp, Vidzeme stony seaside, Randu meadows` trauk, The river Svētupe Livonian (Lībiešu) sacrifice caves and others.
