Photographer and cultural monument researcher Vitolds Mašnovskis has carried out documentary photographic recording and research of about 1,200 manor complexes in Latvia. The multi-volume encyclopedia “Manors in Latvia”, created as a tribute to the centenary of the Latvian state, saw its first volume published exactly in the anniversary year, giving the project a tangible and visible form.
The third volume of the encyclopedia covers 94 manors, arranged in alphabetical order. Each entry first provides the location and economic description of the manor, followed by a brief history of its owners, with emphasis on the beginnings and the end of the manor. This is followed by an account of the construction history of the manor house or palace, as well as a description of the economic buildings and the park.
The 312-page encyclopedia uses German for image identification. Bilingual image captions (Latvian and German) make the publication accessible also to German-speaking readers. At the end of the volume, abbreviations used in the captions, as well as sources and literature, are compiled.
