Description

Photographer and cultural heritage researcher Vitolds Mašnovskis has carried out documentary photographic work and research on approximately 1,200 manor complexes throughout Latvia. The multi-volume encyclopedia “Manors in Latvia” was created as a tribute to the centenary of the Latvian state, and it was during this important anniversary year that the first volume took on a tangible, published form.

The third volume of the encyclopedia covers 94 manors in alphabetical order, from Ķ to M. Each entry begins with the manor’s location and an overview of its economic context, followed by a concise history of ownership, with a focus on the manor’s origins and eventual decline. This is followed by a summary of the construction history of the manor house or palace, along with a description of the complex of economic buildings and the surrounding park.

The 312-page volume uses German for identifying image content. Bilingual captions allow German-speaking readers to engage with the publication. At the end of the book, there is a summary of abbreviations used in image captions, as well as the sources and references consulted.
